Notice of Financial Incentive

Draft — not yet reviewed by counsel.

Last updated: 7 October 2026 · Version 2026-10-05

This notice is for California residents.

California law asks a business that offers something in return for personal information to explain the offer before anyone joins. This is that explanation for Bobao. It is shown on the Create an account screen, before an account exists, and linked from our privacy policy.

What the program is

Bobao is free. When you create an account and check in at shops that have partnered with Bobao, you get:

There is no charge for any of it, and no price or service level that depends on it.

The personal information involved

To run the program Bobao uses:

A shop sees only a first name and one initial, and the count and dates of your visits there.

How to join, and how to leave

Joining. You join by creating a Bobao account and ticking the box agreeing to the terms of use and the privacy policy. Nothing is ticked for you. Creating an account after being shown this notice is your opt-in, and we record the date and the version of this notice you were shown.

Leaving. You can leave at any time, and there is no penalty for doing so:

Opting out of selling or sharing in Your privacy choices does not remove you from the program and does not change your points, cards or rewards.

What we think your information is worth

The law asks for a good-faith estimate of the value of your personal information to Bobao, and the method used to calculate it.

The method. We use the expenses related to offering the program (one of the methods the CCPA regulations allow). Your personal information is exchanged for the program and for nothing else, so we value it at what the program is worth, and the program is worth what it costs Bobao to provide. What Bobao gives you has no cash value: points are never bought, sold, spent or transferred, levels and companions are not sold, and Bobao never pays for, discounts or provides a shop’s reward — the reward on a card is the shop’s. So the cost Bobao counts is only the cost of running it — hosting, the database, email, payment processing, and the work of keeping the cards and points running — divided by the number of people taking part, over a stated period.

The estimate. Our good-faith estimate of the value of your personal information is that cost, per person taking part. It is not stated in dollars yet: Bobao has not launched, so there is no period of running costs and no count of people taking part to divide them by, and we will not state a number we have not calculated. When there is a period to measure, this notice will give the figure that this method produces, and the date it was calculated.

A method we do not use yet. Revenue attributable to the data — Bobao Supporter subscriptions, Bobao Partner Plus subscriptions from shops (analytics and one sponsored row), and any advertising revenue, divided by the number of people taking part — is a second method the regulations allow. Bobao has no revenue yet, so it would produce no figure today.
