Accessibility statement

Bobao is for everyone who buys a drink at a counter, and the counter is the hardest moment in the app: a queue behind you, a phone in one hand, a screen in bright light. This statement says what we aim for, what is built today, where we fall short, and how to tell us about a barrier.
The standard we aim for
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA across the Bobao app and the public pages at getbobao.com. This is our own target, checked by our own tests. No outside auditor has assessed Bobao yet.
What is built and checked today
Each of these is checked by tests we run before each release, against the app’s own code:
- Contrast. Every text color is checked against every surface it can sit on, in both the light and the dark theme, to the WCAG AA ratio: 4.5 to 1 for text, and 3 to 1 for large text and for the Bobao logotype.
- Text size. Text is never drawn smaller than 12 pixels. Sizes are set in relative units, so the text size your browser or phone asks for carries through.
- Tap targets. Every button and control, and every link outside running text, can be tapped across an area at least 44 by 44 pixels, at every screen width we test.
- Keyboard. The control in keyboard focus always shows a visible ring in the accent color. Nothing turns that ring off. A “Skip to content” link is the first thing a keyboard reaches on every page, before the cookie notice.
- Motion. When your device asks for reduced motion, every animation and transition stops.
- Screen readers. A stamp card is announced as one line, such as “7 of 10 stamps”, rather than as ten separate dots. Each page names itself in the browser tab, and moving to another page in the app puts focus on that page’s heading, so a screen reader reads out where you are.
- Layout. Pages are tested at widths from 320 to 1600 pixels, in both themes, for sideways scrolling, text cut off at an edge, and controls drawn on top of one another.
Settings you can change
In the app, under You → Accessibility (and the same switches under You → Look & feel):
- Text size: default, one step larger, or two steps larger, everywhere including the counter.
- Font (under Accessibility): Bobao’s own letters, or the font your phone uses everywhere else, which also follows your phone’s bold-text setting.
- Reduce motion: no slides, rises or ripples, even if your device has not asked for it.
- Higher contrast: darker text and stronger edges, with no tinted text.
- Vibrate on a stamp: one buzz when a stamp lands, or none.
- Color: light, dark, or following your device.
These choices are kept on the device you set them on.
Checking in without sight
A check-in never needs sight. When a code cannot be scanned, the check-in screen shows a six-digit code instead, which you can read aloud for staff to type in at the counter.
Known limitations
We would rather tell you where Bobao falls short than have you find out at the counter:
- Payment pages. Subscribing and managing a plan happen on pages run by Stripe, our payment provider. We do not control how accessible those pages are.
- The map. The street map on the Shops page is drawn from OpenStreetMap’s tiles, which we do not make. Each pin is a named button and zooming has its own buttons, but panning the map needs a drag. Every shop on the map is also in the list below it, which a screen reader can read.
- Shop content. Photos, notes and reward names are written by each shop. We cannot promise every photo has a useful description.
- No outside audit yet. Our checks are automated and our own. Automated tests cannot find every barrier, and no person using assistive technology has reviewed Bobao for us yet.
- Settings stay on one device. Text size, motion and contrast choices do not follow you to a new phone or browser; you set them again there.
Tell us about a barrier
If something in Bobao is hard or impossible for you to use, we want to hear about it. Tell us what you were trying to do, on which page, and with what device or assistive technology, if any.
- In the app: You → Message us.
- By email: hello@getbobao.com.
If you need information from Bobao in another format, ask in the same way.
